Lynn "Red" Paterson: "Redz NZ Journey" (Virtual talk)

The Royal Geographical Society - Singapore presents: Lynn "Red" Paterson: "Redz NZ Journey”, on 25 June 2020 at 7.30pm (GMT+8)! Join us for an inspiring evening to hear Lynn's account of kayaking more than 5,000 kilometres, while exploring the intricacies of human-nature relationships along the coasts of New Zealand.

Lynn is the first person to have completed a solo 5,800-kilometre circumnavigation of New Zealand by sea kayak in one fell swoop - a feat that has been compared to the climbing of Mount Everest. The fact that a great many more people (around 5,000) have succeeded in that ascent than those who have even attempted to kayak round this country’s coastline (a mere handful) speaks for itself. While living her dream, she has also made use of her journey to raise funds and spread awareness for the work undertaken by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.

With Mother Nature’s cruel intervention, what started out as an estimated 180-day journey ended up as a 432-day odyssey. Lynn makes use of her encounters with unfavourable weather and sea conditions to emphasise the importance of respecting nature throughout the course of an expedition.

Similarly, making the effort to connect with crew members and local communities can provide alternative perspectives that teach you about the geographical aspects of Earth’s beautiful coastlines, while achieving your personal goals.
